Leading Shoring Solutions in Lexington, Kentucky

How The Dwyer Company Optimized Hospital Expansion with Helical Tie-Back Shoring

During a critical expansion of Lexington Kentucky’s Central Baptist Hospital, the facility required a sophisticated excavation support system to facilitate the construction of a nine-story parking garage. The project presented a sensitive engineering challenge: executing deep excavations within 150 feet of a fully operational hospital. To maintain patient care standards, our team engineered a solution that prioritized noise and vibration mitigation without compromising the structural integrity of the 15-foot vertical cuts.

Quick Facts

The Challenge:

The primary project constraint was the hospital’s proximity to the job site. With sensitive medical equipment and patient rooms functioning just 150 feet away, traditional high-impact shoring methods—such as driven piles—were not viable due to excessive noise and seismic vibration. The team had to secure excavations ranging from 12 to 15 feet deep while ensuring the “business-as-usual” environment of the healthcare facility remained undisturbed.

Strategic Helical Tie-Back & Shotcrete Application

The Dwyer Company designed and installed a helical tie-back system integrated with a reinforced shotcrete facade to provide a rigid, high-capacity shoring wall. Unlike traditional methods, helical anchors are screwed into the ground with hydraulic equipment, virtually eliminating the vibrations that threaten hospital operations and surrounding structural stability.

The installation process involved a systematic top-down sequence. As the excavation progressed, our teams installed over 200 helical tie-backs to provide lateral earth retention. This was followed by the application of 210 cubic yards of shotcrete, creating a seamless 10,000-square-foot support face.

The entire project was executed over an eight-week period, maintaining a clean and quiet job site that allowed the General Contractor to proceed with the nine-story garage foundation ahead of schedule and with zero impact on hospital services.
